Florence Kendi #PressforProgress
My name is Florence Kendi, am 23 years old, married and with one child. I started as a cleaner, elevated to a trimmer and packer and now I am an assistant machine operator at Plast Packaging Industries Limited whereby by my role involves:
¥ Mould changes.
¥ Knowledge on various machine breakdowns.
¥ Preventive maintenance (total preventive maintenance & service).
¥ Update production & maintenance documents and record.
As an African woman I need to work extra hard since I have many responsibilities as a young mother, a wife, a worker and a student. The challenge I had when I started out employment was juggling all these responsibilities and balancing them.
Over the years, I have managed to allocate time for each of my responsibilities, and thanks to my employer there are considerations for mothers that can be discussed on a need basis like flexibility in shifts.
I am currently an apprentice and in my 3rd level, we undergo practical training and examinations/assessment in every level. I have also been trained in Fire and Safety
At Plast Packaging Industries Limited I love the team work and a friendly working relationship. My family is happy and proud of me! Am also grateful that I can be able to help my family and parents financially.
My Managing Director Mrs. Mary Ngechu inspires me, she is a non-quitter despite the challenges.
I would like to encourage Kenyan women by telling them that “Life is not easy; we must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. Believe you are gifted with something and that this thing must be attained.”
Our Subsidiary, Plast Packaging Industries Limited is a signatory of The UN Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP), a set of principles for business offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.
The International Women’s Day 2018 campaign theme is: #PressforProgress. We join the global movement to help women make positive gains day by day.
